Oh how I love matcha tea! It’s one of my long time, go-to favourite hot drinks. Yes, the taste may take a bit of getting used to, but I think you’ll soon share the fascination of this healthy drink with me.
Matcha has oodles health benefits! In fact, it has the nutritional equivalent to about 10 cups of regular green tea. It’s loaded with antioxidants (especially potent catechins) – more than 100 times than that found in green tea. It helps boost metabolism, aids in detoxification, is calming yet energizing, helps increase concentration, enhances mood and has numerous vitamins. And it’s beneficial chlorophyll make it a sexy green drink that is great for your healthy, mind, body and overall well-being.
You can use matcha in various ways. Here, I’m sharing two of my favourite versions of hot matcha green tea latte’s:
What you need
Basic Matcha Latte
1 tsp matcha powder
2 Tbsp coconut milk (carrageenan free, if possible)
Healthy sweetener, to taste (stevia, honey, maple syrup etc)
1/4 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
1 c boiling water
Matcha Latte Elixir
1 tsp matcha powder
2 Tbsp nut or coconut milk (cashew and almond work well here)
1/2 tsp ghee (clarified butter)
1/2 coconut oil
1 tsp hemp seeds
1/2 – 1 tsp honey (or other natural sweetener, as above)
1 c boiling water
What you do
- the efficient (insert lazy) way: blend all ingredients together in a magic bullet or blender until all ingredients are well combined and frothy, serve hot and enjoy
- the proper way to use matcha is to heat the water, but not to boiling. Add 1 – 2 oz of the hot water to the matcha powder and whisk together with bamboo whisk (this is the traditional way to prepare matcha) until blended and frothy, then slowly add remaining water and continue to combine with whisk until all powder is dissolved. Once the tea is made, you can add the remaining ingredients and make a latte. For best effects in the variation, heat the milk first so the entire drink is served hot and frothy.
Cheers!
